Alright guys, this is the best laundry tip I have ever recieved. Ever. If you do this one thing, it makes laundry seem so much less… daunting. Scary… frightening.
This tip came from my wonderful mother-in-law, who managed to clothe a house of 3 boys and husband while having a full time job only doing laundry one day a week. While I do not know all of her secrets (I think sheer will-power is one of them… and also one of my weaknesses) I will be sure to share any more revolutionary tips I recieve.
Are you ready?
Always fold or hang the laundry AS it comes out of the dryer.
Sounds simple right? Well think about it for a second. If you’re anything like me, you start some laundry in the dryer, throw another load in the washer, and come back an hour later to swap everything out. The stuff in dryer has to go somewhere right? I mean, you have another load that needs to dry. So you put the hot, fresh, clean clothes in a basket and tote them of somewhere where you fold them immediately ignore them for periods of time with no foreseeable end. Eventually you may fold them. But chances are good that you will rumage through them like a vacation-suitcase and use them up or dump a second load on them long before you get around to folding them. And when you pile on more and more loads you eventually have a mound of laundry that you know will take hours to fold lurking in the corner of (most likely) your bedroom which you methodically avoid for another week.
Now, how long does take to fold one load of laundry? Five minutes? That’s not that bad. Anyone can fit folding one load of laundry into their day right? Our problem is that instead of conquering that five minute task, we fall prey to a false sense of efficiency (gotta get that next load into the dryer) and stare at the basket of clothes… so self contained.
“They’re not hurting anybody…” we think to ourselves. “Why stuff them into a drawer or closet so soon… besides I have to… *makes up a task with a sense of urgency*”
But what no one ever told you is that clothes want to be put away. They made their trek around the world as you wore them, waited patiently for their spa day in your laundry basket, endured all kinds of chemicals and exposures to heat, and now they just want to go home with all their friends. It’s that mean old laundry basket that wants to keep the clean clothes hostage. (To be fair the clean clothes are so warm and inviting…) And if you fold them as soon as they come out of that dryer then guess what?
They’ll be wrinkle-free!
Or atleast very close. So do yourself a favor, don’t fall victim to the seduction of Mr. Laundry Basket, who will entice you with promises of time-saving and this-is-how-we’ve-always-done-it. Beware his false message of proficiency and get those clothes folded and hung up and back home where they belong before they even make it to that basket! One load is always manageable.
So what about you, oh person on the other side of the screen? Has anyone given you a tip that changed the way you keep house? Share with us in the comments below!
P.S. Your clothing thanks you in advance…
